The deployment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) represents a global commitment to fostering a more sustainable and liveable world. As nations work toward achieving these targets by 2030, educational institutions, including architecture schools, are increasingly expected to embed sustainability principles into their curricula. Despite growing global efforts, a significant number of architecture design studios remain disconnected from the UN SDG agenda and research has not yet produced a replicable tool for aligning architecture and design briefs for SDGs targets. This gap leaves educators without structured methods for embedding SDGs into studio-based learning, and students without clear frameworks to engage with sustainability in design practice. This study aims at developing and testing a tool that positions SDGs as a central component of studio-based learning. To address this objective, the study introduces gamification to generate SDGs target-oriented architectural design prompts. The game Sustainable Architecture Prompt (SAP) is applied within a sample of design studios at Deakin University in Australia, where it guided the development of design briefs aligned with specific SDG targets. SAP enabled researchers to define design prompts that directly incorporate SDG considerations. It requires users to engage in a research phase following gameplay, encouraging deeper investigation into the complexity of SDG targets, their descriptions, and contextual relevance. The resulting prompts served as foundational data for specifying studio briefs and supported the articulation of responsive design strategies. As the first tool of its kind, SAP offers a flexible and creative framework for embedding SDGs into architectural design education. Its adaptability to various educational settings positions it as a strategic resource for curriculum innovation and sustainability integration.
